Boiler kettling or banging pipes?
A rumbling, kettle-like noise from your boiler is called kettling. It usually means sludge or limescale is restricting the flow of water through the boiler’s heat exchanger, so the water overheats and boils in spots. It’s a warning sign that the boiler is under strain. Get it checked by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
What kettling sounds like
It sounds like a kettle coming to the boil: a rumbling, popping or whistling from the boiler, usually when the heating or hot water is running hard.
What causes it: sludge or limescale
Inside the boiler, water passes through a heat exchanger. If sludge from the radiators or limescale from hard water builds up there, the water can’t flow through freely. It overheats in spots, forms steam bubbles, and those bubbles make the noise.
East Kent has hard water, so limescale is common, mostly on the hot-water side of a combi boiler. Sludge comes from corrosion inside the heating system itself. We’ll tell you which one you have.
Is it safe to keep using the boiler?
Don’t ignore it. Kettling puts extra strain on the boiler and can lead to breakdowns. Book a Gas Safe registered engineer to look at it.
If you ever smell gas, turn off the gas at the meter, open the windows and call the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999.
Banging or knocking pipes: other causes
Not every noise is kettling. Air in the system, a pump set to run too fast, or pipes expanding and contracting as they heat up and cool down can all cause knocking or ticking, often when the heating comes on or goes off at night.
How it’s fixed
If sludge is the cause, a powerflush clears it from the boiler, pipes and radiators, and inhibitor and a magnetic filter help keep it clear. If limescale is the cause, the boiler may need descaling. Often it’s a bit of both, and we’ll explain what your system needs before any work starts.

Questions people ask
What does it mean when the boiler is kettling?
Sludge or limescale is restricting the water flow through the boiler’s heat exchanger, so the water overheats and boils in spots, which makes the rumbling noise.
Can I still use my boiler if it’s kettling?
Kettling is a warning sign, not something to live with. Book a Gas Safe engineer to look at it. If you ever smell gas, turn off the gas at the meter and call the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999.
Why are my heating pipes banging at night?
Often it’s pipes expanding and contracting as the heating switches on and off, air in the system, or the pump speed. If the boiler itself is rumbling, it may be kettling.
Will a powerflush stop kettling?
If sludge is the cause, it usually helps. If it’s limescale, the boiler may need descaling too.
